When Columbia College set out to refresh the Atkins-Holman Student Commons, the goal was clear: create a dynamic, multifunctional destination that would draw students back to physical campus life and away from virtual settings. Partnering with Kimball International, the project team transformed the space into a durable, inviting, and highly functional hub that perfectly balances energetic collaboration with quiet focus.

A key element of the space’s transformation is its thoughtfully curated furniture solutions from Kimball International. The redesign features versatile work and lounge zones (including privacy booths, open lounge seating, and café tables) paired with integrated power towers and acoustic cloud and wall elements. These furnishings, along with distinctive flooring features and decorative wall coverings, bring warmth, texture, and visual identity to the entire floor plan.

Seamless process control and tight coordination were primary drivers of the project's success. Executing a complete makeover without standard construction site meetings, the design team developed a detailed graphics board to secure board approval, while site inspections ensured field conditions were accurately mapped. Daily communication among project managers, vendors, and trade partners kept the schedule on track without disrupting ongoing campus activities. This dedication resulted in a seamless handoff with zero punch list items.

"The transformation of the Atkins-Holman Student Commons exceeded every expectation we had. The team managed every detail seamlessly, from initial design concepts to the final installation, delivering a vibrant, high-impact space on time and with zero punch list items. Our students immediately embraced the environment, and it has truly redefined the campus experience."
